From the course: Microsoft Project 2021 and Project Online Desktop Essential Training

Understand the differences between Project editions

- [Instructor] Project Online is a cloud-based portfolio project management solution hosted by Microsoft. Different licenses provide tools to support team members, project managers, and people who manage portfolios of projects. License pricing is per user per month. The Project Plan 1 license helps project team members collaborate, it s a web and mobile user license, the team members can use to view tasks, update status, submit time sheets, share documents, and communicate with colleagues. Project managers on the other hand need to collaborate and manage projects. Project Plan 3 offers web, mobile, and desktop access. It includes the same collaboration features in Project Plan 1, and also includes the Project Online Desktop Client, a desktop application for scheduling and managing projects. This client includes advanced features and has built-in agile features, as well as Microsoft Planner. Project managers can save and publish projects to Project Online so they're visible across the enterprise. Because it's cloud-based, the software is updated regularly. Project Plan 5 includes everything in Project Plan 3 and also provides enterprise features to manage demand, analyze and prioritize projects, optimize resource usage across projects, and evaluate performance with portfolio reports. All these licenses are per user, so your organization can purchase the quantity of each license it needs. For example, it might buy one Project Plan 5 license, five Project Plan 3 licenses, and 25 Project Plan 1 licenses. Microsoft Project 2021 is a non subscription edition of the Desktop Client. You install the software on a desktop or laptop computer. The software might get some updates through software patches to fix security and other issues, but you don't get new features until you install the next release, like when you upgrade from Project 2019 to Project 2021. Project Standard 2021 provides core features needed to manage projects. It doesn't include several additional features and doesn't connect to Project Online or Project Server. Project Professional 2021 connects to Project Server or Project Online for enterprise project management. It offers additional features like inactive tasks, team planner view, sync with SharePoint tasks list, and Skype for business integration. Project Server is an on-premise portfolio project management solution, basically the same capabilities offered by Project Online, except that they're installed within and hosted by your organization. Project Server is available through Microsoft Partners and does require a high level of expertise to design and configure for your organization. That's a quick overview of the project software options you can choose from.
