Practice makes perfect with interviewing
- Becoming a skilled, qualitative researcher is not something you learn overnight, it takes time and practice. These skills are absolutely something you can learn though, and I know you can do it too because you're in this course right now. That alone is a great sign that you're open to upskilling. Practice takes time, but please know that you don't need to be in an official interview to hone these skills. As humans, we often listen to a conversation, not to really hear the other person, but to respond. As an interviewer, your goal is to really listen, plain and simple, so start there. In the next conversation you have with another person, I want to challenge you to do something. When they talk, don't think about what you are going to say next, just listen, make it all about them, nod, give verbal cues like "Go on" or "Uh-uh," and most of all, don't respond with your thoughts, advice, ideas, don't share, just listen.
