- Now let's talk about lighting. Lighting is really at the heart of cinematography and things feeling cinematic, and that's 'cause back in the days of film, you literally could not get an image without exposing celluloid and emotion to light, right? So a lot of what makes the difference between something feeling really engaging and cinematic or just feeling amateur is lighting. Now, that's going to be the domain of your director of photography and the gather who's the chief lighting technician, but you really should have a sense, both with what the basic sort of technique being lighting is, and also how lighting contributes to your story alongside all these other elements that we've been talking about.
