Upgrade to macOS Monterey

- [Instructor] In this video, I want to talk about what it takes to upgrade to macOS Monterey from a previous version of macOS. First, I want to go to the System menu by clicking the Apple logo in the top left corner, then I'll go to About This Mac. And you can see that I am currently running macOS Big Sur on this computer, which is macOS Version 11. I'm ready to upgrade to Monterey. Now, it's important to make sure that your files are backed up before running a major upgrade like this. It's rare, but there is a slim chance that something could happen that could affect your files. So to start the upgrade, we'll close this, and I want to go to that System menu again, and I'm going to go to System Preferences. Then I'll click the option here to go to Software Update. Give this a moment to check for updates, and you may see the upgrade to Monterey already available here. If you don't see it here, you can check the App Store. So in the Dock, I'm going to click the icon for the App Store to open that up. You do need to make sure you're signed into your Apple ID account. So, I'm already signed in. I see my name down here at the bottom. But if I did not, there would be a button to sign in. Now, by the time you're watching this video, Monterey will probably be featured on this front page, or you can just search for it using the search field up here on the top left. So I'll search for Monterey, and I have to scroll through the search results here, and here it is, so I can click on that to see it. And then you could click this Get button for the free upgrade, or you could do it over in System Preferences. So I'm going to click this button now. It jumps me over to System Preferences and it will download the installer. It's asking me if I'm sure I want to download this upgrade. I will confirm that. And now, it's going to take some time to download the actual installer. So let's skip forward in time to when this download is finished. When the download is finished, you'll see a window like this, or if you don't see, it might just be because it's behind another window. So you can click on it down here on the Dock and it will come to the front. When you're ready, you can click the Continue button to start the installation. You will have to agree to the licensing terms, so you can scroll through and read everything here, then click Agree and confirm right here. And then it's going to confirm that it will install the upgrade on the main system drive, and that's fine. Some people might have multiple drives on their computer with bootable installs of macOS, but that is pretty rare. If you do have that, then you should choose the drive that you want to install the upgrade on. But I just have the one system drive, so I'll click Continue. I'll need to put in my administrator password for this computer and confirm. And now, it's going to take some time to start that install process. Now, the time estimate you see here on the screen is only the first part. It will take some time, then the computer will restart, then continue with the installation, and that will take even more time. So let's skip forward in time again. When the installation process is done, just sign into your account as normal. I'll put in my password and hit Return. Then, you will see a few setup screens. If you get this question about iCloud Drive and if you don't know what that means, I recommend you turn this option off because it affects the default location where files are stored. To learn more about this option, I recommend you watch the iCloud Essential Training course. Then, go through the rest of these steps. And when this is all finished, I want to confirm that Monterey is installed, so I'll close the App Store. And I'm here in System Preferences, so I'm going to click on that window and I'm just going to quit that. And then I'll go to that System menu again, so I'll click the Apple logo in the top left corner, go to About This Mac. And now, it shows me that I am running macOS Monterey, which is Version 12. So now, I'm all done with the upgrade.
