If you're looking at changing your industry or geographic area, you may find yourself needing to reach out to unknown people, also know as cold contacts. Making new contacts can be intimidating, but with the right approach, it can be very productive. There are four steps you should take to make this strategy more effective. The first step is to target organizations that you would most like to work for in the future. You will want to do some basic research on organizations and know the various organizational structures. Often, you can find this on their web site or by using tools like LinkedIn. The second step is to identify the right person to contact.
