Deciding when and where to challenge bias
- Speaking up when you see bias can be one of the most powerful acts of inclusion, but that takes bravery. And bravery is about making an intentional choice to be vulnerable, taking ownership of your own biases, and using your privilege to make change. Knowing when to speak up is one of the most difficult things to figure out. We want to be brave, but for many of us, there's situations in which our responsibility is unclear. It's hard to know the right thing to do. I get that. So I'm going to give you three variables that you should consider when determining when, whether, and how to speak up. The first is timing. Is this the right time for you to make a comment? Are you able to address what's happening without derailing the whole meeting? Is it important to speak up as an advocate right now?
