Calling in vs. calling out
- Even when we feel brave enough to speak up, we may not know exactly what to say. This means like every other aspect of an inclusive mindset we're going to need to practice. Think of these interventions as calling people in, as opposed to calling them out, and there are a few ways to do that. First, you can ask for more information. Letting people know that you want to know more about what they think can disarm their defensiveness. It can also give them an opportunity to stop and think for themselves about the possible impact of what they've just said. For example, if someone says that a person is not a good fit for a position, you can ask them probing questions like what do you mean by that? Another strategy is to separate intent from impact. Assuming good intent can go a long way in encouraging someone to hear your feedback. You can say things like, I know that when you wrote that she was nice in her performance review,…
