- Not so fun fact. You and your team spend about 30% of the workday on email. And while certain emails can be time savers, like a weekly email update that replaces a 30-minute meeting, email can otherwise be a major distraction. To avoid letting your inbox be the boss of you, grab your notebook or device to capture these easy-to-implement changes. The first is to minimize checking email. Constantly checking keeps you from focusing on deep work because you're forever context switching. Keep track of how many times you check your email in a single day. You'll be shocked. The average is around 77. Then set a reasonable daily limit on checking your email and stick to it. Hold yourself to once or twice an hour, and be sure to close the app when you're done.
