"Like me" bias in recruiting
- One common area of pushback toward inclusion efforts is the concept of fairness. The argument is that creating special programming for underrepresented or marginalized groups is giving them an unfair advantage. However, when we think about the historical and societal disadvantages that many groups have had, it becomes clear that their lack of representation at every level in the organization is directly related to these past discriminatory practices. We are all biased. It's the way our brains work. Our brains use fast response thinking and slow response thinking as critical functions and our ability to process information and make decisions. We like to say the bias is not the shark. It's the water. It's the environment we are all in. The millions of data points we've gotten all of our lives from school, family, friends, media.
