- When you first meet someone, it might be hard to demonstrate how competent and capable they are by delineating between just the verbals and non-verbals. To help you hone your message, let's go over non-verbals that you can work on to purely communicate competence. First up, confident stance. Do you remember your parents telling you to stand up straight so they know that you are actually paying attention. Let's add it to the non-verbal list of your personal pitch. Own the room when you walk in. Stride in and stand like you've been there hundreds of times. Keep your head centered and straight. Your shoulders drawn back and relaxed. Your arms relaxed by your sides. Your feet positioned towards your listener. If you're seated at a table or behind the camera, the same principles apply.
