- Whenever people have geographic values in the data, there's a big temptation to create a map. Maps are a great looking visualization, but is it always the right choice for our data? And in some cases, yes, it's absolutely the right decision. But depending on the data and the question we're asking, it can also be the wrong visualization. And that's because of some shortcomings that are inherent with maps. First, let's look at an example where mapping the data actually makes it harder to understand the data. So say we're interested in looking at the amount of sales of our company across the states in the US. As we can create a map of states, that intention is there to plot the amount of sales per state on a map. Let's do that and see what it looks like.
