- Money, like mathematics, is a uniquely human creation. Through the ages, both have changed the world and shaped the human experience. Money emerged as a viable medium of exchange for a wide range of transactions, eliminating the limitations of bartering. Fundamentally, money can take many forms as long as a community accepts it as a form of payment. Today, the exchange of money is facilitated by a wide range of mechanisms which span from basic notes and coins to checks, credit cards, and apps. Common to all these is a required relationship with financial institutions and governments. However, since 2009, a new form of money, cryptocurrency, has emerged that breaks with conventional monetary practices and requires no intermediary to function. It's money in a digital form that enables transactions directly between individuals and to and from all manner of entities.
