- [Instructor] Let's start off by asking a question. Which of these maps is correct? Which one best represents the earth and tells the most truth? There are significant differences between these three maps. In map one, it appears that Greenland is much larger than the content of Africa, but that is not reflected in map two or three. The actual answer to this question is simple, but understanding why is complicated. All three of these maps are wrong in very different ways. In fact, it's a fundamental feature of making maps. Flattening a sphere's surface from 3D into 2D will always, mathematically, distort features. This is pretty much the standard map of the world that you'll see online. The one where Greenland looks much larger than the continent of Africa. It uses the Web Mercator projection and was popularized by Google Maps because it worked really well for maps of the USA.
