Geographics vs. projected CRS
- [Instructor] There are fundamentally two different types of map projections in existence, projected CRS and geographic CRS. If we want to do geometric calculations, like calculating areas or distances between points, then we need to ensure that our data is stored in a projected CRS. Whereas if we want to create a data visualization of GIS data, we need to use a geographic CRS. It's important to understand the difference between how coordinates are stored in each type of projection. In a geographic CRS, points are stored in pairs of longitude and latitude coordinates, which means the distances between points is measured in degrees. However, in a projected CRS, the coordinates are a Cartesian geometry with pairs of X and Y coordinates. This means that the distance between points are measured in physical units like meters.
