Base maps and tiles

- Base maps are often an extremely important part of mapping. Base maps are different representations of the surface of the Earth, but they're often wildly different to one another. They can contain physical and/or geopolitical information. You might have a completely physical base map, comprised of satellite imagery. Or, you might have computed physical characteristics like contour lines or relief map. When we think about geopolitical information on maps, we're talking about very human information. This is going to include country borders and sub-regions, like counties or boroughs. It will also include transport routes like roads, train lines, or potentially other logistic routes. These maps therefore contain names for regions and places. It's very important to acknowledge when talking about geopolitical information, that there are hundreds of disputed international territories, names for territories, and the localization…
