- [Instructor] Erasing files from a disc does not completely remove the data that they contain. Erasure leaves remnants that may still be accessible using specialized tools. Data sanitization tools correct this issue by completely removing data from devices. Let's briefly talk about the structure of file systems. When you write a file to a hard drive, the operating system may store pieces of the file in different physical locations on the drive. These locations are assigned based upon what space is available on the disc at any given time. There isn't a special place set aside for different folders. The operating system then needs some way to put all these pieces back together and present your data back to you in its original form. It maintains file system information known as metadata that includes details about the name of a file, its creation date, access permissions, and most importantly, the location of that file's data on the disc.
