- Classic data centers were around for a long, long time until, hm, depends who you talk to, but arguably around the year 2005 or so, something called virtualization came along that changed everything. Now, we've got other episodes that go into all kinds of virtualization. I certainly don't want to do that right here. But what's more important to me right now is that we think about what would virtualization do to a data center. Well, the answer is simple, folks. We, well, first of all, would got rid of a lot of physical servers because instead of having each server being monolithic, we could have one box and put five or six servers on that one box. So that was great. Saved on power, saved on backups, all the usual things that virtualization does so well. But the other thing that virtualization did, first of all, it did something called network function virtualization or NFV. Now, NFV simply means that we take stuff like these routers here and then we suddenly virtualize the devices…
