Crafting your message tactfully
- In the final part of our tact and diplomacy formula, let's turn back to communication basics. The message should be all about the audience. What relationship do you have with a person in the interaction? Is it a longstanding professional one or is this a chance encounter? What is the power dynamic? Are you a customer? Is this person your colleague or your boss? Whether you are reacting to or initiating the message, you quickly have to calculate the impact of your interaction and decide on the level of tact and diplomacy necessary. The main consideration relating to message is your approach, tone, and channel used. You can still be tactful and use a direct or indirect approach in your communication.
