- Many of us have dealt with this type of delicate situation. You have asked your boss to meet to see if you can attend a different conference that is longer and more expensive than the one department members are attending. Before we talk about what you're actually going to say in the meeting, you need to prepare by encoding your message. Take a walk in your boss's shoes. Will he or she be hesitant in spending the additional funds? Well, you have to think of win-win situations for the rest of the department. In order to be polite, focus on shared value with your boss. How will the department benefit? Will you bring more value to upcoming projects? How can this training also benefit others who learn from this information? Obviously timing is critical.
