- If you're a manager or a leader of any kind in some way, then you hold a special key to employees' ability and willingness to speak up. Remember, they won't do it if they don't feel safe and supported. And that's where you come in. Certainly engaging in bystander intervention yourself will send a loud message that you are an ally and will support other allies. But there's more. You have the opportunity to coach employees who cross a line. Someone who gossips, uses microaggressions, yells, or is argumentative can be coached to make positive change. And trust me, the earlier you step in, the better. The longer these behaviors are allowed to go on, the more frequent and aggressive they become and the harder it is to address them. See behavior as a performance problem, just like not meeting a quota. Someone doesn't make 100 calls a day. After a few conversations and some coaching, they go into the discipline track.…
