Building more rapport with colleagues
- Intervening isn't about being a one hit wonder. You see something bad happening. You step in, and then it's over. Of course, the context of work means social, relational, emotional, and psychological factors are at play. One great way to be an upstander then is to build relationships with the people around you so that they feel psychologically safe to share things with you. And open enough with you to take in your feedback. People are more likely to tell you about their challenges if you have rapport with them, and it'll be much easier to address poor behavior with someone if you've got a relationship with them. One way to build rapport is to find some common ground through asking questions. Everyone loves to talk about themselves so you can get them interested in talking to you by asking them to talk about themselves. Start off simple.
