Implicit bias
- We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are. This popular saying, often attributed to author Anais Nin, captures exactly what implicit or unconscious bias actually is. As the name suggests, unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside of their own conscious awareness. After this lesson, you'll be able to both identify implicit bias and develop strategies for challenging your own assumptions. Let's be honest. We all unconsciously draw conclusions about our environment based solely on our experiences and exposure. It's why in the United States, we see a red light and we know instinctively that we should stop the car.
