For context, I approached a candidate using the Biosecure Act. Those unfamiliar with the Biosecure Act simply put prevent certain Chinese companies from operating in the U.S., if the Senate agrees, it becomes law and by 2032 U.S. Pharmaceutical and Biotech companies will have to cut ties with said organisations. Now, it is a long way from passing and may never be passed as the American healthcare system is so integrated with those Chinese Manufacturers. However, it gives reason to pause, to think about the future, to think about current partners, competitors, market, contracts, and pricing. So whatever happens with this, time will tell (most likely nothing) but one thing you must avoid is working with the wrong recruiter/headhunter or agency.

The biotech IPO market remains open, but a backlog of "IPO ready" biotech companies remains. Key stats: - 9 biotechs went public in Q1 2024 raising $1.3B - This is up from $375M in Q1 2023 and roughly matching pre-pandemic Q1 2020 levels - Still way below the $4.6B raised by 31 companies going public in Q1 2021 - 6/9 IPOs were >$100M - CG Oncology ($380M) and Kyverna Therapeutics ($319M) had the largest respective raises - Companies with more mature pipelines and led by industry veterans are raising the most cash - Preclinical biotech Metagenomi's IPO shows that the IPO market is open for the right early stage biotechs - Only 3/9 of the Q1 public market debutants are trading about their IPO price (CG, Kyverna and Telomir Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) - There are still 25 outstanding applications for biotechs who have indicated plans to go public but have not yet made it out Let's hope for continued momentum throughout 2024 as potential rate cuts move closer 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gj-z2n7x

Here's what you need to know: 1. The BIOSECURE Act, if passed, could force U.S. drugmakers to cut ties with certain Chinese biotech companies by 2032. This affects over 120 U.S. biopharma drugs currently partnered with these firms. 2. WuXi AppTec's deep integration in U.S. pharma (involved in developing ~25% of drugs used in the U.S.) means any restrictions could have far-reaching effects on drug development pipelines. 3. It seems that the Illumina/Grail Divestiture is finally coming to resolution and Grail will be spun-out and joining the NASDAQ by the end of June, almost 4 years after the then $8bn acquisition. Illumina shareholders will receive 1 share of Grail for every 6 Illumina shares they own. The scope of Grail's technology is one that I have long been excited about and I hope that all of their aims come true as it would be a real game changer and, if all their ambitions are realized, will no doubt save many many lives. With at least 20,600 biotech jobs gone in 2024 😲 ... Why I think there is still a lot of light at the end of the tunnel! 💡 Recently, a disturbingly large number of people in the US, particularly in Massachusetts, have directly contacted me saying they have either been laid off, or they feel a layoff is coming... While this is obviously very disruptive to people's lives, it is important to remember that change is often for the better, although perhaps a little scary! I truly believe this is just an industry shake-up rather than a decline. Like any industry, the biotech industry goes through phases of boom and busts. Due to the sheer amount of increasing funding coming into the industry. Reasons to be positive: 💰 Funding is still flowing! Despite negativity there was still $5.9B of funding in Q1 and Q2 numbers (when they are released) are expected to be similar. 💪 This is one of the most resilient industries. People will always need better medicine, so the market will always grow in the long term 📈 Plenty of companies are still hiring. Layoffs tend to be in larger, or VC backed companies. There are plenty of mid-sized, profitable biotech companies who are looking to hire today. 🚀 Although being laid off is tough, it may the spark needed to send your career in a new direction which will take you places you could not have gone before! 📈 Here are a list of a some Biotech companies whose stocks have risen in 2024: Avidity Biosciences, Inc. Biosciences: - The company has made significant progress in its (AOCs) as well as positive trial updates for its lead candidate AOC 1001, targeting myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Strategic partnerships with Bristol Myers Squibb have also contributed. Avidity have grown to a $5.5B Market Cap. Merus N.V.: - The companies stock has increased in 2024 primarily due to promising results from clinical trials of its antibody therapy, petosemtamab, which targets head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Merus N.V.' market cap has grown to $3.5B. Tango Therapeutics - The company's ongoing development of PRMT5 inhibitors, particularly TNG908 and TNG462, has generated investor interest. TNG908, which is in phase 1/2 trials, has not shown any dose-limiting toxicities, and patient enrollment for locally advanced solid tumors, including aggressive glioblastoma, is ongoing.
