Want to know where startups come from? Everywhere! Recently I attended Cicada Innovations Tech23 event where they reported in 2023 that out of 128 deep tech startups that had applied, 98 had formed outside of institutions. How often do we report on the origins of innovation? What would you call them? Indie Startups? Other countries refer to a similar breed of startups as “non-tech transfer” which has been reported on occasionally. This is more a reference around the origins of the IP vs the origins of execution. University of Illinois 2019; 823 Non-Tech Transfer / 155 Tech Transfer https://buff.ly/2JefoXG SynBio accelerator SynbiCITE 2017; 67 Non-Tech Transfer / 79 Tech-Transfer https://buff.ly/43FE2b8 It’s an interesting metric as it speaks to how innovation has no boundaries. Having said that, you can bet that many founders will collaborate/partner with institutions whether for talent, networks, access to platforms, or other resources. Institutions are one of the more common strategic partners for innovation Enablers of the non-tech transfer trend have been excellent university/near university-based entrepreneurship programs, industry partnerships, access to enabling infrastructure, collaborative ecosystems, and our innate drive to solve the problems we encounter. Ultimately, the more “on-ramps” we create (funding, programs, etc...) for innovation regardless of where the ideas come from, our ecosystem will flourish. This is a "Nature-backed" strategy, microbiomes, ecosystems, you name it. There is strength in diversity. I hope more programs report on this metric as there could be opportunities we're not exploring that could benefit everyone. What a great Kick-off for our first DeepTech Alliance Public Utility Program 💥 In my mind Public Utility is one of the most interesting domains to work with onwards. Think infrastructure, security, sustainable cities, hybrid attacks, tremendous electricity challenges, fresh water supply, climate change challenges, CCTV networks, charging infrastructure, etc etc. Public Utility companies will play a vital role in making our societies safe, green and nice to live in. Personally I love the approach of Multi Utilities.
