Despite their critical role in safeguarding biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples' voices are not always represented. Community leader, Samaï Gualinga, expresses the importance of Indigenous representation and participation in decisions that affect their territories, homes and the communities that depend on forests. People, Nature and Climate.
About us
The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining. The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

2024 showed us why immediate action on #climate and nature is essential🌎 We witnessed the hottest year on record. Devastating #floods took lives and destroyed homes in places where degraded landscapes make communities more vulnerable to heavy rainfall. Blistering #heat caused heatstroke and deaths. #Wildfires scorched landscapes. Policymakers need to act ambitiously on climate and #nature — together — in 2025. NEW RESEARCH: Climate change is intensifying wildfires globally, posing significant threats to agriculture, livelihoods, and financial stability. WRI’s newest research introduces a first-of-its-kind wildfire loss assessment framework that offers solutions by combining remote sensing data, climate scenario analysis, and event simulation models with a case study in Yunnan, China. Key highlights from our research include: 💰Significant Losses: Between 2011 and 2020, wildfires caused annual losses ranging from US$135.8 million to $254.8 million in Yunnan's five key crops 🌾Impact on smallholder farmers and financial institutions: Extreme wildfire events account for 15–30% of annual losses, posing serious threats to smallholder farmers and risks for financial institutions 🔥Shift in wildfire patterns: Future projections indicate a shift in peak wildfire risk months 🏦Financial sector implications: Financial institutions face challenges in managing climate-induced risks, underscoring the need for comprehensive solutions and external support Read the full paper to learn more: https://bit.ly/4gxm6EV

Nearly 25 percent of the world's total land area suffers from degradation (WRI 2014). Restoring these lands with ecologically sustainable, socially inclusive, and economically feasible solutions can provide multiple benefits for ecosystems, people, and their priorities. Some of these include food security, natural resources and biodiversity conservation, and enhanced local incomes and livelihoods. While several global and regional initiatives have committed to restore millions of hectares of land by 2030, turning these ambitious commitments into action requires clear pathways, tools and guidance. World Resources Institute's publication, ‘Step-by-Step Guide for Restoration Planners and Practitioners’ is a practical resource for planning and implementing a landscape approach to restoration projects. The guidebook identifies five essential stages of restoration projects – Scope, Design, Finance, Implement, and Monitor each outlined with key steps and a checklist to help project developers track their progress and plan properly before launching into a new project.
