📢 BMZ Announces Inclusive City Hub for Global Accessibility
Ahead of GDS 2025, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) recently announced the Resilient and Inclusive City Hub, an initiative aimed at improving accessibility in cities for persons with disabilities. With over 1.3 billion people—more than 15% of the global population—living with disabilities, and more than half of them residing in cities, this initiative seeks to ensure that cities are designed to be inclusive and resilient for all, especially during crises and disasters.
Why is this important?
- The Hub, as part of the United Nations Global Disability Fund, will bring together international organizations, development banks, urban planners, and advocacy groups to improve urban accessibility.
- Its goal is to make public spaces more accessible for all, particularly for persons with disabilities.
- The initiative aims to conduct pilot projects in five selected cities across the world by 2026, improving the lives of people with disabilities through better-designed buildings, roads, transport, warning systems, and services.
The initiative was announced at the European Regional Disability Summit by Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, highlighting Germany's commitment as a co-host of the GDS to creating inclusive urban environments.
The announcement marks a key milestone in preparations for the GDS 2025, offering a significant opportunity to reshape how cities are designed and ensure they are accessible for all.
