25 years ago, GIS Day was established by Esri to celebrate and recognize the profound impact of GIS, a powerful and versatile tool that links data to maps and today, is utilized across nearly every industry. Used for everything from supporting urban planning and asset management to informing emergency response systems and environmental impact modeling, GIS uncovers patterns, relationships, and geographic context, helping to enhance communication, efficiency, management, and decision-making. This year, our team used GIS to build an interactive map to illustrate Woolpert’s vast range of geospatial projects and their impacts worldwide. Thank you to the geospatial experts at Woolpert and around the world. Here’s to the next 25 years of GIS advancement! “Geodesy is the foundational science behind our success as it is crucial to global positioning, mapping, navigation, and timing that we utilize every day." On December 16, 2024, the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, at the request of NASA, organized a meeting of selected experts from government, industry, academia, and professional organizations at the Keg Center in Washington D.C. to discuss and strategize mitigation of the crucial challenge of rebuilding the U.S. geodesy workforce. Woolpert Vice President and Chief Scientist Dr. Qassim Abdullah was invited to represent the geospatial industry and provide a brief talk on the role of the industry and professional organizations in addressing the issue. “Over the last two decades, in the United States, there has been an observable decline in university programs offering education in geodetic sciences, which has resulted in a lack of a trained workforce needed to develop and maintain the U.S. geodetic infrastructure. This includes hardware development, operations, maintenance, and associated data analysis and product dissemination,” Qassim said. “In my presentation, I highlighted the concern of our geospatial mapping industry, about the impact of the crises on the National Geodetic Survey efforts in maintaining the National Spatial Reference System, which is essential for our industry and national infrastructure.” This meeting came at a crucial time. Recognition goes to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Academies’ Board on Earth Sciences and Resources/Committee on Solid Earth Geophysics, as well as to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s National Geodetic Survey, the NGA, NASA, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for their leadership in forming the “Geodesy Community of Practice” to address the crisis. #geodesy #geospatial #mapping Kim Hansen
