2024 YEAR IN REVIEW: This year, the Wisconsin DMV launched two new initiatives to help first responders provide safer and more efficient services. Hybrid and electric vehicle owners must now display new EV stickers on their license plates. The stickers are in coordination with a law passed in 2023 for the safety of first responders when dealing with electric powered vehicles in emergency situations. The other new initiative was the emergency contact program. Wisconsin drivers now have the option to add their emergency contact information to their driver or ID record. The service was put in place to provide law enforcement the ability to contact a family member or friend more quickly in an emergency. Transportation Connects Us
About us
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) was officially established in 1967 by combining formerly independent agencies and the Department of Motor Vehicles (which included the State Highway Commission, State Aeronautics Commission and State Patrol). WisDOT supports all forms of transportation. The department is responsible for planning, building and maintaining Wisconsin's network of state highways and Interstate highway system. The department shares the costs of building and operating county and local transportation systems - from highways to public transit and other modes. WisDOT plans, promotes and financially supports statewide air, rail and water transportation, as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The department works closely with other state, federal and local agencies to meet changing and growing travel needs. Transportation impacts everyone and WisDOT is committed to providing the safest, most efficient and highest quality transportation services to best serve the needs of the state, its citizens and many visitors. The department is made up of three executive offices and six divisions organized according to transportation function. WisDOT's main office is located in Madison, but the department maintains regional offices throughout the state as a way to preserve the local approach to transportation development and better serve customer needs.

2024 YEAR IN REVIEW: Earlier this year, WisDOT implemented a program for counties and local communities to conduct a comprehensive inventory and assessment of all local bridges and culverts in the state between six and 20 feet in length. This new program establishes a process to efficiently identify and inspect small structures on the local network to keep them safe and operational. We are committed to helping communities make strategic decisions and investments to repair or rebuild their local infrastructure. We partnered with the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, Wisconsin Towns Association, Wisconsin County Highway Association and Wisconsin County Association to conduct the inventory and inspection process. The inventory process is ongoing, and the inspection of these small bridges and culverts has begun and will continue next year. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g3c8jHtM. #WisDOTYearInReview2024

ICYMI: Wisconsin’s frozen road law is in effect for the northern half of the state. So how are frozen roads determined? Frost tubes are used by highway workers in every Wisconsin county to determine how deep the frost is beneath the road. Once the frost depth hits 18 inches, a frozen road declaration is made, enabling increased weight limits for certain commercial truck loads.

Wisconsin’s frozen road law goes into effect tomorrow, Dec. 21 for Zones 1 and 2. These regions include US 10 near Stevens Point along with numbered state and federal highways north of US 10. The law allows for increased weight limits for log haulers and vehicles transporting salt and sand. The seasonal weight restriction program is one way to protect Wisconsin’s investments in roads. A frozen road declaration will be made in other areas of the state when conditions warrant. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g4wJ54Pa

BE REAL ID READY: It’s the last holiday travel season before READ ID requirements begin in 2025. The Wisconsin DMV encourages travelers to update their driver license/ID cards ahead of the May, 7, 2025 deadline. In 2025, airline travelers will face new identification requirements to board their flights. Beginning May 7, the regular Wisconsin driver license or ID will no longer be accepted identification for domestic air travel or to enter a federal building or military base. Those who already have a driver license or ID may obtain a REAL-ID compliant card for $14, the cost of a replacement license. There is no additional fee if the upgrade takes place at the same time as the renewal. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gKVR2hQD

DYK? The Drivotrainer, a driver education program, was introduced via pilot program in Wisconsin in 1962. The program featured classroom training along with films depicting actual driving conditions, techniques, and hazards. Each student in the classroom had their own “Aetna Car,” named after the Aetna Insurance Company which created the program. Each “car” had realistic features like a steering wheel, brakes, clutch, lights, horn and an accelerator that created highway noise. The students' performance was recorded on an automatic scoring machine and then tallied to produce a result of pass or fail.
