"One day in late April, one of my professors sent an email announcing that Whole Foods Market was offering two internship spots for Universidad EARTH students. After some thought, I decided to apply. The following day, I received an email from Kim V. informing me that I was preselected for an interview with someone from their Sustainability Team. A few days later, I interviewed with one of their Climate Advisors, Nijia Z., and the day after that, I received the internship offer.
The entire process happened very quickly, and soon I was flying out from Costa Rica to Austin, where I spent the last 15 weeks with the #Sustainability Team, researching practices that Whole Foods can integrate within its supply chain to protect and enhance biodiversity. My work focused mainly on the beef and dairy supply chains, as well as the different methods to measure this complex and beautiful field of biodiversity to assess whether we’re achieving the desired impact. This work contributes to finding the best on-farm practices that Whole Foods can provide to farmers to help them build more resilient and adaptive production systems in the future.
I learned a lot from this experience, not only about the importance of taking action to protect biodiversity within our productive systems, but also the teamwork culture that I experienced within my very supportive and smart team. During all these weeks, my Team Members and the Team Member Services team have been accompanying me through the intense and fun learning process that is #TeamWFM. It has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, figure things out as I go, and approach problems like solving a puzzle. And just like completing a puzzle, it has been incredibly rewarding to see everything come together.
I have felt truly immersed in my role on the Sustainability Team, where my ideas were heard and valued. Proactivity, responsibility, honest communication and support from others when needing help are key skills I will keep integrating both in my academic and personal life."
