  • Our Senior Corporate Counsel, David Haughton, JD, CPWA®, has been featured in Barron's with an insightful byline on estate planning strategies following November's election results. In his article, Dave explores how the recent Republican control of the presidency and Congress may impact estate planning, particularly the potential extension of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Here are some key takeaways from his article: 📌 Estate Tax Exemption: The TCJA doubled the estate tax exemption (now $13.6M for individuals and $27.2M for couples). If the act sunsets in 2026, these limits could drop significantly—perhaps making now a critical time to reassess gifting strategies. However, sunset has become far less likely than many thought before the election. 📌 To Gift or Not to Gift?: For those considering large gifts, Dave emphasizes understanding both the potential benefits (like avoiding future clawback issues) and risks (such as losing a step-up on the basis of gifted assets if the TCJA is extended). 📌 Irrevocable vs. Revocable Trusts: Dave breaks down the importance of aligning trust strategies with client goals. Irrevocable trusts offer tax benefits but come with risks, while revocable trusts provide greater flexibility to adapt to life changes. 📌 Plans Over Promises: Dave highlights the need for estate plans that can adapt to evolving policies, ensuring clients are protected regardless of legislative changes. • Are your digital assets protected? 📲 As our lives become increasingly digital, the need to include online accounts, cryptocurrencies, and other digital assets in estate plans has never been greater. Yet, many Americans—especially those with significant wealth—are leaving these assets unaccounted for, exposing their loved ones to unnecessary challenges. The Bryn Mawr Trust 2024 Digital Assets Survey sheds light on this growing issue, and the findings are eye-opening: - Nearly half of Americans with estate plans account for their digital assets, yet 44% of high-net-worth individuals—a surprisingly lower percentage—have done so. - The most common reason for neglecting digital assets? "I never thought about it." - Among those without provisions for digital assets, 49% cited a lack of awareness, while 27% didn’t realize such planning was necessary. - Only 24% of Americans work with a financial advisor, though this increases to 55% among high-net-worth individuals. Similarly, just 32% of Americans have an estate plan, compared to 64% of high-net-worth individuals. 💡 These findings highlight critical gaps in estate planning that can have lasting consequences for families. At wealth.com, we’re committed to helping individuals and advisors close these gaps. Our forms allow your fiduciaries to access your digital assets. We empower you to protect your legacy in today’s increasingly digital world. A special thank you to Jamie Hopkins Esq., LLM, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, RICP®, one of our strategic advisors, for his expertise in helping to bring this important report to life! 👏 Check out the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gEtQfxmG

  • Our Co-founder and Chief Product Officer Danny Lohrfink shared his thoughts with The Daily Upside on how AI is changing the game for financial advisors. “If your tech stack is not well positioned to meet the needs of digitally native populations, you’re going to lose those clients when the wealth transfer happens.” While it won't be replacing advisors, he says, because their humanity is essential to clients, AI is becoming an integral part of their workstreams so they can work smarter and spend more time with clients.
