Preparing Wake County children age 0-5 for success in school and life ahead. 📚
About us
Wake County Smart Start is a nonprofit organization that prepares children for success in school and in life. We serve children ages 0-5 and prepare them for kindergarten and life ahead. Founded 1996, Wake County Smart Start improves the quality, accessibility and affordability of child care and family services. We are a private-public partnership that builds bridges between nonprofits, private child care centers and public institutions. We are administer the public NC Pre-K and ThreeSchool programs. We work closely with private child care centers to increase the quality of early childhood education and to place children in free programs. We fund programs across Wake County that provide much-needed services to children and families including parenting support, mental health services, early literacy and other community-centered programs. We believe that: * Learning begins at birth; * All children deserve the best opportunities to grow * Families and communities play a critical role in children's learning; and * Collaboration is essential to accomplish our vision. *Poverty is not destiny - if we invest in children and families, they will thrive.

Literacy starts long before learning how to read, just like language starts long before children learn how to speak. October is National Book Month! Here are some ways to celebrate the love of books with your littles to help them become life-long readers: 📖✏️ Write a book together that tells the story of your family. Family stories and oral storytelling are so important. Tell your family's history, trips you've taken, special memories, even recipes. What your family does and where it comes from is special, so celebrate it! 📕☕ Host a cozy family reading night. Each family member chooses a book to share. Buy favorite snacks and hot cocoa. Everyone gets into pajamas, curls up in a comfy blanket and reads the books together. Blanket forts and flashlights are optional! 📚💡 Read a new library book together each night for a week, and vote on your favorite one. Then visit a bookstore to buy the book that was the winner and add it to your home library! #wakesmartstart #parenting #earlyliteracy
