Virginia's labor market continues to show resiliency amid cooling labor trends in other states, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the unemployment rate in the commonwealth inched up slightly to 3.0% in November, it is much lower than the 4.2% unemployment rate in the country overall. Virginia was one of four states that saw an increase in nonfarm payroll employment since the prior month. Additionally, employment levels were 1.7% higher compared to the same time last year. https://lnkd.in/g-MPvQuX

In November 2024, building permits were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 798,000 in the South, 5.7% above the October 2024 rate and 0.6% below the November 2023 level. Single‐family building permits were at 573,000; this is 1.8% above the October 2024 levels, but 3.9% lower than a year ago. New single-family residential construction continues to pick up this year while multifamily construction pulls back. So far this year, authorized residential building permits is 2.1% lower than last year. For Virginia, total building permits issued this year were 6.9% lower than the building permits issued over the same time last year. However, we see that the decline in building permits is due to slower multifamily housing activity, while single family permits have increased. Multifamily permits are down 29.7%, while single family permits have increased by 7.0% in Virginia. https://lnkd.in/eTtJNStC
