Research with, not on, Veterans.

About us

At VetREC (Veteran Research and Education Curation LLC), we are dedicated to highlighting the remarkable work of Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) and research institutions. Our mission is to serve those who serve Veterans. Serving VSOs: VetREC collaborates with VSOs to evaluate their effectiveness and communicate their successes to diverse audiences, including grant funders. By partnering with us, VSOs can develop and maintain robust internal research infrastructures, enabling them to measure, analyze, and share their impact on Veterans over time. Supporting Researchers: VetREC assists researchers in “work with and not on Veterans” in their studies, boosting participant numbers, and improving response and retention rates. Our curated workshops and Veteran research engagement toolkits empower universities and research institutions to work collaboratively with Veterans. This approach ensures reciprocal engagement, simplifies data collection, and maximizes community impact.

  • 🌟 Highlighting Veteran Voices in Research 🌟 At VetREC, we are passionate about ensuring veterans’ lived experiences shape the research that impacts their lives. The recently published article, “Experiences and Lessons Learned from a Patient-Engagement Service Established by a National Research Consortium in the U.S. Veterans Health Administration”, provides an excellent example of how meaningful veteran engagement can transform research processes and outcomes. The Pain/Opioid Consortium of Research developed a Veteran Engagement Panel (VE Panel) to bring veterans’ voices to the table—ensuring research is not just about veterans but truly with veterans. 🔑 Key Highlights: * Over 48 projects consulted over 3 years. * Veterans reported increased self-advocacy and a deeper understanding of VA research. * Researchers saw real-world improvements to study design, recruitment, and outcomes based on veteran feedback. This article is a powerful reminder that when veterans are valued as partners in research, outcomes are more relevant, impactful, and equitable. At VetREC, we work every day to bridge this gap—supporting organizations in creating meaningful veteran research engagement strategies. 📝 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gYihAiW5 Let’s continue to foster research WITH veterans, not just on veterans. • From Research ON Veterans to Research WITH Veterans: A Crucial Shift in Engagement For too long, research involving veterans has overlooked one critical element: the veteran’s voice. Veterans are more than participants—they are partners. A 2023 article, "Joining Forces With Veterans: Veterans’ and Researchers’ Perspectives on Veteran-Centered Engagement Practices," published in the Community Engagement and Scholarship by David Hibler, Cheryl Krause-Parello, Brian Gliba, James Morris, and C. Daniel Mullins, underscores what VetREC champions every day: research with veterans must honor their lived experiences, cultural nuances, and hard-earned trust. 🔑Key Takeaways for Transforming Veteran-Centered Research: 1. Understand Veterans’ Experiences with Research: ⭐️ Acknowledge the diversity of the veteran community—branch of service, roles, and unique experiences. ⭐️ Address lingering mistrust caused by historical misuse of research (e.g., coercion and lack of consent). ⭐️ Recognize military culture’s influence on participation, where “voluntary” can blur into “expected.” 2.) Build Veteran-Centered Research Teams: ⭐️ Trust and Respect: Success hinges on both practical reliability and emotional mutual respect. ⭐️Engage Veterans as Partners: Veterans on research teams bridge cultural gaps, improve recruitment, and ensure outcomes reflect their community’s needs. ⭐️ Encourage Authentic Participation: Veteran team members can communicate safeguards like confidentiality and voluntary consent, reducing fears around participation. Why Does This Matter? Veterans’ perspectives are essential to designing meaningful, actionable research. Without their voices, we miss the opportunity to co-create solutions that resonate and drive real change. Please take the time to read the full article, which was authored by a coalition of veterans and academic researchers. https://lnkd.in/gN-zGy6W

  • Did you know that the way media portrays veterans significantly influences their post-military career transitions? A fascinating new study by Michael Kirchner, Ph.D., published in the Journal of Veterans Studies, explores three predominant portrayals of veterans—assets, liabilities, and social responsibilities—and their implications for veterans navigating the civilian workforce. Using Media Effects Theory, Kirchner highlights how these stereotypes can shape both employer perceptions and veterans’ self-views, ultimately affecting career opportunities and societal integration. This type of research is critical for understanding and addressing the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. At VetREC, we believe that collaboration between researchers, veterans, and Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) is essential to creating meaningful change. We are excited to highlight organizations and studies like this one, which amplify veteran voices and challenge outdated stereotypes. We’d also like to congratulate Khadija Boyd, Ph.D. Boyd on becoming the new editor of the Journal of Veterans Studies! This journal has been an invaluable platform for advancing scholarship that directly impacts the veteran community, and we’re excited to see how Dr. Boyd will continue this tradition. At VetREC, we’re committed to helping VSOs and researchers connect, collaborate, and create sustainable solutions for veterans. By supporting research that not only identifies challenges but also drives systemic change, we’re helping to shift the narrative from stereotypes to empowerment. If your organization wants to make a greater impact in veteran research or better support veterans through data-driven strategies, let’s connect. Together, we can build a future where veterans’ stories and contributions are truly valued. #Veterans #CareerTransition #Research #VSOs #ThoughtLeadership #VetREC #JournalofVeteransStudies https://lnkd.in/gaP9QDZV
