  • Have you ever considered the misconceptions that you and others have about Veterans? How could you help mitigate them? 2019 Research by Duke University found that Veterans are widely perceived to excel in their ability to complete certain tasks, such as planning and executing operations. But, organizations bypass candidates who are Veterans due to a false perception that they are less adept at tasks that rely on emotional intelligence and creativity. Organizations have also falsely assumed that all Veterans have post-traumatic stress disorder, that they are hard-nosed and mean, and that military spouses are uneducated due to the frequent moving that often comes with being in a military family. • Why do you think some Veterans leave their first post-military position within a year? The biggest reasons are that they feel uninspired, lack support, don’t have a defined career path, or their career is misaligned with their needs. Orion Talent recommends these retention strategies to help you keep and leverage Veteran talent: * A mentorship program * An organized way to hear the Veteran’s voice through a Veteran committee or Veteran Employee Resource Group * Defined Career Pathways * Up-skilling opportunities * Creating an inclusive workforce Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3DRlIPJ Join the Veteran Champion Movement. • Ever thought about hiring military spouses? Veterans and military spouses are being recruited in record numbers. Military spouses are an underrepresented talent pool, with unemployment hovering around 21%. In its 11th year of the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership, in 2023, 70 new employers were inducted to join the push to hire military spouses. Since its inception, more than 250,000 military spouses have been connected to employment opportunities across the nation. Employers who participate undergo a robust vetting process. Their commitment includes “recruiting, hiring, promoting and, most importantly, retaining military spouses,” said Patricia “Patty” Barron, deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy. • 🎉 Happy New Year, everyone! 🎊 As we welcome 2025 with open arms, let's take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military veterans. 🇺🇸🎗 In the spirit of the new year, I ask you amazing civilian Veteran Champions: How can you show your support and gratitude to our Veterans throughout the year? 🤔 Whether it's through volunteer work, donations, or other meaningful action, I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Let's come together to make a positive impact in the lives of those who have served our country selflessly. 🌟 Could these ideas (actions) become part of your New Year's resolution? • What do you hope to do differently in the New Year? New Year’s resolutions are good for us… they help us reorient, rethink and plan about how we want to do better, be better and improve. I make 2-3 each year and am pretty good about keeping them. How about you? This year, I invite you to consider how you could be a Veteran Champion and do more for those who serve and sacrifice for us. Be it providing practical support like running an errand, mowing the lawn, or emotional support like listening, asking, caring or help with employment by making a referral, hiring for aptitude and training and/or offer feedback early and often. What ideas do you have? Please share them with us. Join the Veteran Champion Movement. Be a part of the win! #TrustedVeteranHiringAdvisor #VeteranTalentAcademy #NewYearResolutions

  • What resonates with you when you hear Auld Lang Syne? This is the song we sing every New Years Eve as we close one year and open the next. It helps us remember old friends and the nostalgic feeling of another year passing As I reflect on this song, I think about how military-connected people feel when we leave military friends - when we lose our military tribe. It is a big loss and can make our post-military transition difficult. How could you support a transitioning Veteran (and family members) who are searching for their new civilian tribes? • What does it mean to continue serving after taking off the uniform? As 2024 draws to a close, I'm humbled to share a deeply meaningful moment: receiving the Mike Miller Veteran Community Engagement Award from the Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce Foundation. This award holds special significance as it was established in memory of my friend Army Veteran Mike Miller, honoring his exemplary service before self. The award recognizes Arizona Veterans who embody Mike's legacy by actively supporting Veteran community organizations and inspiring others to serve. Recipients are chosen for their dedication to uplifting fellow Veterans and their families, encouraging others to do more, and inspiring Veterans to continue their journey of selfless service. Join me in continuing Mike's legacy - how are you serving your community today? Share your story below! Join the Veteran Champion Movement.
