The MH-65 has served proudly for 40 years, going through five major upgrades to keep it at the top of it's game. Recently, the USCGC Bertholf (WMSL-750) and the USCGC Healy (WAGB 20) met at sea near Unimak Pass, Alaska. #DYK that the namesakes of both the Bertholf and Healy embodies the spirit of U.S. Arctic exploration, governance, humanitarianism, and environmental stewardship? #throwbackthursday Bertholf, who served as Captain-Commandant of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and Commodore during the First World War, is best known for leading the 1897 Alaska Overland Expedition, a daring winter rescue of over two hundred stranded whalers. This courageous mission earned him a gold medal and demonstrated his commitment to the safety of those in peril in the Arctic. He also played a key role in establishing the U.S. Coast Guard and founded the International Ice Patrol, enhancing maritime safety in Arctic waters. Captain Healy, commanding the legendary cutter Bear, became a prominent figure along Alaska’s coastline, enforcing federal laws and providing humanitarian aid to indigenous populations and stranded sailors. He also introduced reindeer from Siberia to support native communities facing declining wildlife populations. Healy’s exceptional seamanship and dedication to the region earned him a heroic reputation in Arctic history. Their legacies continue to resonate, emphasizing the importance of protecting Arctic resources and respecting native cultures in this challenging environment. Commodore Ellsworth P. #WhereAreWeWednesday Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Garrett Nims, an aviation survival technician, commonly known as a Rescue Swimmer, treads water off shore of this location. Nims and other Coast Guard helicopter crew members across the U.S. regularly conduct training that includes deploying rescue swimmers, supplies and gear to underway vessels. HINTS: 1.) This state has the world's tallest mountain when measured from the bottom to the top, standing over 33,000 feet. 2.) This state is the only U.S. state that grows coffee 3.) #ICYMI, the Coast Guard recently commissioned their newest Air Station at Naval Base Ventura County, California. The ribbon cutting and commissioning ceremony was held in mid-November, marking the establishment of the newest Coast Guard air station in 25 years. Air Station Ventura features a $70 million state-of-the-art, 48,000 square-foot hangar, and a 12,000 square-foot administration facility, ensuring that Coast Guard personnel have the resources needed to carry out their vital missions. This new facility is expected to house three MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and approximately 100 personnel, significantly enhancing the Coast Guard's capabilities in the region.  The air station serves a crucial role in protecting the maritime region from Orange County to San Luis Obispo County, including the vital ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, encompassing an area of responsibility of more than 350 nautical miles. Its missions include 24/7 emergency response; search and rescue, drug and migrant interdiction, law enforcement, and marine safety and environmental protection. The permanent presence of the Coast Guard in Ventura County provides enhanced security and quicker response times to emergencies, benefiting the local community and maritime industries. District 11 now consists of five air stations in its area of responsibility: Humboldt Bay, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Ventura. This Christmas, the Coast Guard is honoring a special member of our community. Jean Strickland, who served as a SPAR from 1944 to 1945, turns 102 on Dec. 25, and the Coast Guard needs your help to honor Strickland and her service by sending her a birthday card or letter. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eRJgDvMr Founded in 1942, the SPARs (Semper Paratus, Always Ready) are officially known as the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve. During World War II, thousands of women volunteered to serve in critical military shore jobs to support the war effort. Though they were demobilized in 1946, their legacy lives on today; SPARs opened the door to generations of women serving in the Coast Guard. Jean Strickland was one of them. At twenty-one years old, the then-Los Angeles claims agent heard a radio announcement calling on women to serve. She quit her job and joined the Coast Guard in March 1944.
