Updates

  • We're sad to announce that this is the last year that we're running the Community Calendar competition. For over 24 years we've run the competition where each year schools from around Upper Hutt enter artwork around themes such as recycling or statements on why they love Upper Hutt. We've loved seeing the creative young artists and wordsmiths reminding us of the beautiful place we live in. While we won't be delivering the calendars to letterboxes this year, they are now available for pick-up from Civic or Upper Hutt Libraries.

  • Something exciting has landed at our Upper Hutt Libraries! ✨ Our Central Library is the first in New Zealand to have a 24/7 Click & Collect locker. We extend a huge thank you to the New Zealand Libraries Partnership Programme (NZLPP) at the National Library of New Zealand for funding this project. 🙌 Enjoying the wide variety of library items available for borrowing has never been easier for our staff and community. Books, magazines, jigsaws, and more are now just a click away, and can be collected whenever it suits customers. 📚 We are excited about this amazing opportunity to make our library collections even more accessible and convenient to enjoy. Read more about the project here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gKXzhwAm

  • 🎇 Sneak peek! 🎇 ‘Paw-sitvely summer’ is our summer campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting responsible dog ownership to ensure the well-being of our furry companions during the warmer months. 🐾 Our goal is to provide information to our Upper Hutt dog owners about potential risks and equip them with resources to make the information readily available. 🐶 Have sneaky preview of our imagery for this campaign below or find out more by going here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gDV7xX_U

  • Congratulations to Dsport and Wellington Severe Weather Reports! 🎉 Both Upper Hutt local initiatives were announced as winners at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards held last week at Te Papa. 🏆 dsport are paving the way to make high-performance sport inclusive and accessible for all abilities. They won first place in the Sports and Leisure category, and the Supreme Award, for hosting the inspiring World Wheelchair Rugby Paralympic Qualification Tournament earlier this year. Wellington Severe Weather Reports [tag page] were recognised with the Heritage and Environment award. Their dream of bringing real-time weather data to the community became a reality at the opening of a high-tech local weather station in June 2024. ⛅ Read more about it here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gXPzUcgD

  • If you visited Upper Hutt Library last week, you might've seen our Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) team participating in a training exercise. In this exercise scenario, our EOC along with all the other EOCs in the Wellington region were activated after an 8.2 earthquake had hit the South Island along the Alpine Fault and caused significant damage to the Wellington Region. Teams had to navigate many challenges including... 👉 Performing rapid impact assessments. 👉 Getting health and safety info out to the community. 👉 Ensuring community hubs had been set up with power, blankets and kai. 👉 Communicating with other EOCs and emergency services. Alongside our day-to-day jobs, we regularly train to activate and run Upper Hutt's EOC to manage a disaster response in our city. These exercises are SO important so that when we do have an event happen our team are ready to coordinate local responses and support the local community. Read news: https://lnkd.in/gjRN3sHN

  • Yesterday morning our staff joined Kiwis across the country in the National ShakeOut Drill, practising Drop, Cover, and Hold in our buildings. Why does this matter? New Zealand is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, with Wellington sitting on some of the country's most significant fault lines—Upper Hutt included. The Wellington Fault runs right through our city, so it’s not a question of ‘if’ an earthquake will happen, but ‘when’. While we can’t control earthquakes, we can control how prepared we are—at home and at work. Practicing what to do keeps us ready for the unexpected. Here’s how you can stay prepared: ➡️ Rehearse your workplace and household evacuation plans ➡️ Put together a household Grab Bag and a Pet Go Bag ➡️ If you're in a tsunami zone, practice your evacuation route ➡️ Check your emergency water supply ➡️ Ensure someone on your school’s approved list can collect your children in an emergency ➡️ Locate your nearest Community Emergency Hub It’s actions like these that show how much we value safety and preparedness—for our teams, our community, and our city. To learn more about how you can be ready, check out Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) 's resources for Get Ready Week: https://lnkd.in/grMftFdV #ShakeOut #EmergencyPreparedness #GetReadyWeek
