Despite having a full-time job, Stephanie couldn’t afford rent. She and her daughter found themselves homeless, spending the next six months sleeping on friends’ couches or in hotels, packing up belongings daily to move. At the urging of a friend, Stephanie reached out to Community Action of Hillsboro, Oregon. Thanks in part to funds received from Umpqua Bank’s Warm Hearts Winter Drive, Community Action’s Family Shelter serves an average of 30 families per year like Stephanie’s, providing a safe, supportive living space and help to return to permanent housing. Stephanie recalls the enormous sense of relief she felt when they moved into the family shelter and later into their own apartment with income-based rent. “I honestly have no idea what we would have done if we hadn’t found this program...
