Christian Editors Retreat with Jonathan Schindler "Each year the membership of the Academy of Christian Editors (ACE) gathers near a Christian publishing hub. In September, ACE held its annual retreat in Colorado Springs at Glen Eyrie Castle, and Stephanie Rische and Jonathan Schindler represented Tyndale at the event. ACE’s core values are Christ, creativity, collegiality, craft, and continuity, and the annual retreat draws editors together in each of these values through sessions, shared meals, and ample time to rest. This year the sessions were a particular highlight. Bob Fryling (retired publisher from InterVarsity Press) shared “A Vision for Christian Publishing” which focused on our role in healing and renewal. Authors Richard Foster and Miriam Dixon were present to discuss Foster’s best-selling Celebration of Discipline and Dixon’s 2024 biography of that book, Worth Celebrating. Members heard from agents on market trends, discussed best practices for working with freelancers, and considered how to integrate Sabbath into the rhythms of editorial work. ECPA president Jeff Crosby encouraged editors who also want to write. And each year members share their best books of the year—an eclectic list that serves as a good blueprint for the following year’s reading. As engaging as the sessions were, the main draw of the retreat is always time spent in fellowship with others who share our vocation. It is encouraging to hear that we are not alone, and for those who are earlier in their careers, it is inspiring to hear wisdom born of experience. There’s also a good deal of laughter. No ACE retreat is complete without time to oneself. At Glen Eyrie—with its majestic views of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful architecture of the castle—we were only too eager to intersperse time indoors with quiet walks outside, gazing at God’s grandeur (and the gatherings of wild turkeys). The retreat was a time of refreshment and reorientation as we seek to fulfill our role in “ministering to the spiritual needs of people, primarily through literature consistent with biblical principles.”
