Congratulations to our founder, Howard “Buddy” Hayes, on his receipt of the “Outstanding Leader Award” during the Fifth Annual Hudson County Champions Recognition Breakfast, hosted by the Hudson County Office of Inclusion and Accessibility. https://lnkd.in/euM6bQb9 Nominated by a community leader, Buddy was recognized for his dedication to improve the quality of life for all Hudson County residents with disabilities.  A highlight from the nomination stated “Buddy engages in community events with the Jersey City Public Schools Department of Special Education by visiting classrooms to teach about fire prevention, volunteering at Community Cup and Special Olympic Unified Sports. He ensures his crew participates in the Captain Mark Lee Toy Drive, delivery toys on their days off to schools throughout Jersey City, bringing joy to an endless number of students with disabilities.” Pictured with Buddy and his crew is Dwayne, a member of the community with intellectual disabilities and a lifelong Jersey City resident. “When Buddy first introduced Dwayne to his crew, there were things that Dwayne as well as the firefighters had to learn about each other. The crew realized that [he] just wanted to be friends, fit in, and be treated like one of the guys. Dwayne visits the firehouse regularly and will help sweep, take out garbage and even helps wash the fire truck. After everything is done, he joins the crew for dinner…Captain Hayes’ ultimate goal is to bring awareness to the rest of the JCFD when dealing with individuals with disabilities.”
