The U.S. health economy is $4.5T – more than the entire GDP of any country in the world other than China – and is projected to grow to $7.7T by 2032 – more than the combined total GDP of Germany and India. What is society’s return on this massive investment? Not much, according to our latest report, the 2024 Trends Shaping the Health Economy. The 2024 edition of our Trends Shaping the Health Economy Report explores the 8 macro trends that will define the emerging landscape of the U.S. healthcare system and concludes that the winners of healthcare’s negative-sum game will be those who deliver optimal value to their customers. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eqEqsPX3

Despite years of declining national mortality rates, #cancer prevalence is on the rise and projected to increase over the next two decades. The data reveal troubling trends, including: 1️⃣ The incidence rate is increasing across several cancer types. 2️⃣ The factors influencing cancer disease burden are evolving. 3️⃣ #Prostate cancer patient volume is increasing following decades of decline. 4️⃣ Seemingly healthier people are being treated for cancer. 5️⃣ The supply of #oncologists is not evenly distributed at the market level. 6️⃣ #Hematology and #oncology drugs will be most impacted by the loss of patent protection. 7️⃣ The value of new clinical interventions remains uncertain.

Although America’s per capita #Medicaid spending is higher than any other country’s total per capita health spending, overall health outcomes in the U.S. lag behind comparable Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Life expectancy has not improved meaningfully since 2000, has declined since 2019 and remains nearly four years below the average of OECD peers. Rates of #obesity, #diabetes and #behavioralhealth conditions are at all-time highs, further straining the system and reflecting poor health. These trends reveal an unfortunate reality: The U.S. health economy prioritizes revenue generation over value creation. More in #TheCompass.

The U.S. healthcare system in increasingly unaffordable, even for Americans with employer-sponsored health insurance. High-deductible health plans (HDHPs) were introduced to reduce employee spending on #healthcare by increasing employee control. However, #deductibles for these plans have continuously increased, leaving many employees struggling to cover out-of-pocket costs. According to the data: 🏥 Nearly half (47%) of insured Americans struggle to afford the cost of healthcare. 💸 57% of Americans spend at lead one-tenth of their monthly budget on healthcare. 🧾 85% of adults with #healthcaredebt owe $500 or more. Why it matters: The financial strain of healthcare had prompted some Americans to delay or forgo necessary care and others to seek out non-traditional sources of health information – many of which may lack medical accuracy and oversight.

Price and quality for common #inpatient medical services in competitive markets are not correlated. While the median negotiated rate for MS-DRG 190 (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) in Chicago is $14.1K, the provider receiving the highest rate ($21.7K) has a higher mortality rate than 66.7% of all other hospitals. 🎧 "When you peel the onion back, there are the four things that we do most often in a hospitals, and #hospitals are supposed to report on those four measures, but fewer than half the hospitals in the U.S. report all of those measures. Less than 80% of physicians are participating in #MIPS. I don't know how we can say that we're serious about quality in healthcare, when we don't even enforce reporting." Trilliant Health CEO, Hal Andrews, shares his perspective on #healthcare quality, the role of the employer and more in 4sight Health's How Healthcare Revolutionaries Think podcast. 4 new findings from our Chief Research Officer Sanjula Jain Nagpal's November research: 🤖 While most physicians report that #AI will improve diagnostic ability (72%) and work efficiency (69%), surveys reveal that patients are less optimistic, with the majority reporting AI will either not impact (27%) or worsen (33%) health outcomes. 👨⚕️ The net number of physicians that started and stopped practicing between 2022 and 2023 resulted in a -1.5% workforce reduction. 🦿 After total knee replacements were removed from the #IPO list in 2018, #inpatient volume declined by 17.9% from 2017 to 2018. Similarly, inpatient volume for total hip replacements declined by 35% in the year following their removal from the list in 2020. 📱 A quarter of Americans report trusting #socialmedia content creators for health information, compared to 52% who report trust in national health authorities.
