By Thanksgiving 2026, Gulf Shores visitors will have a new way to walk off that extra serving of sweet potato casserole —75 feet above the ground. The city is set to build a pedestrian bridge spanning the Intracoastal Waterway, a long-awaited project that promises easier access to both sides of an evolving entertainment district. On Monday, the Gulf Shores City Council unanimously approved a $24.3 million contract with Northport-based Harrison Construction Co. to make it happen. Elliot Maisel is not only shepherding the move of Mobile's airport closer to the downtown area. He’s also organizing a once-in-a-lifetime move of Gulf Distributing Holdings LLC, his 51-year-old, family-owned business, to downtown. “It’s about pride in the city, and maybe it will encourage others to move their businesses downtown or locate their businesses in the city,” said Maisel, the president & CEO of the business that was officially founded in 1973, by his late mother, Frieda Maisel, a former teacher. #ICYMI: Alabamian Abbie Stockard earned the title of Miss America 2025 on Sunday night. The #Birmingham native, 22, is planning a career as a nurse anesthetist specializing in pediatrics. When she talked with AL.com Mary Colurso on the possibility of winning the title before the pageant, she said: "The way I think of myself is, I’m very joyful. I’m very compassionate. I love to serve, and that would be the forefront of my reign.” 📸: Tamika Moore #thisisalabama #missamerica

Home sales rebounded in the #Huntsville area in 2024 after a couple of years of decline. Look for that trend to continue in 2025, according to area realtors and real estate analysts. “Home sales could jump by 15-25% in 2025, fueled by post-election momentum and lower interest rates that ease the mortgage rate lock-in effect,” realtor Matt Curtis told AL.com. He expects interest rates to dip into the low 6% range in 2025, “assuming inflation stays under control.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7dutdzP #thisisalabama #realestate

2024 was another excellent year for the #Birmingham food scene. From Asian to Mexican, steaks to seafood, fast-casual to fine dining, new restaurants popped up all over the Magic City this year. A couple new spots we love: 🍲 Current Charcoal Grill, an Asian-American restaurant inspired by a centuries-old Japanese grilling tradition using slow-burning Binchotan charcoal. 🌊 Surf Hound, which is inspired by both the Asian beach cuisine that Chef Abhi Sainju Sainju remembers from his youth and the American coastal food he has experienced as an adult. 🍝 Luca Lagotto, a concept inspired by a trip the Pihakis restaurant family took to the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy about two years ago.
