FED FLASH: As expected, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 bp today to a range between 4.25% and 4.50%. This preserves the Fed’s ability to respond to incoming data given heightened levels of uncertainty around labor markets, inflation, and growth. The Fed also adjusted the “dot plot” to reflect its expectations of two more 25-bp cuts in 2025, down from four previously. We continue to believe the Fed will ultimately have to cut more aggressively than widely expected, as rates above 4% are still restrictive and will continue to act as a drag on economic activity and credit creation. Our view is that labor markets will continue to weaken, with most leading labor indicators (job openings, hiring rates, quit rates, temporary workers, etc.) down substantially from their peaks, suggesting unemployment rates will rise going forward. With inflation also trending lower, we expect the Fed will be forced to lower rates to support a slowing economy and rising unemployment. Markets currently expect approximately two more 25 bp cuts next year, with a terminal rate around 3.75% by the end of 2025.
