Kodex helps companies manage their obligations to law enforcement to prevent real world harm

About us

Companies use the Kodex portal to manage workflows, communication, and secure file transfers with law enforcement and government agencies seeking information through legal process. With request verification, end-to-end encryption, full audit trails, transparency, real-time collaboration, and API integrations, Kodex is a complete case management solution for LERT and Trust and Safety teams. Each year, millions of data requests are sent from governments and law enforcement to companies who are legally required to respond. Currently, most data requests are sent through a combination of faxes, emails, and snail mail, making it difficult to manage, track, and respond to requests securely and on time.

  • Did you know?! Enterprises in the EU are facing persistent challenges in verification and compliance for data requests from law enforcement. 😬 In fact, 45% of direct requests submitted to companies lacked sufficient context, leading to delays or rejections. Additionally, companies reported that 70% of law enforcement requests contained errors, including missing legal basis, incomplete forms, or lack of proper signatures. These stats come via the SIRIUS EU Electronic Evidence Situation Report 2024 from Europol. The good news—Kodex can help companies like yours eliminate these issues by automating validation of law enforcement credentials and compliance with jurisdictional requirements. 👍 Automation is crucial when trying centralize workflows to minimize errors and ensure adherence to global standards. What. A. Week! We just wrapped up an incredible trip to Florida for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Crimes Against Children Conference! It was a whirlwind few days: training hundreds of investigators on Kodex, connecting with countless others at our booth, and soaking in the energy of an event that gets bigger and better every year. Huge shoutout to Mike Duffey and his phenomenal team—special thanks to Sherry and Annamarie—for organizing such an impactful event! Wednesday had us multitasking like pros. While in Florida, we teamed up with NW3C, Inc. for a virtual training session. Leah Sredl, the Global Law Enforcement Operations & Incident Manager at Bumble Inc., and I each delivered our training decks to a fantastic group of law enforcement professionals. Somehow, we also found time to squeeze in a Kodex training session for the City of Meridian Police. It was amazing to guide their investigators on maximizing the potential of their free Kodex accounts—turning tools into solutions. Thursday was the cherry on top! We hosted a special training session with the Orlando Police Department, bringing along our friend Matt Turner, Manager of Law Enforcement Engagement at Roblox. OPD generously opened their training room to other local agencies, allowing us to spread knowledge far and wide across the region. Thanks, OPD—you were incredible hosts! If your agency is interested in hosting a training session, we’d love to set one up! Let us know if there are specific Kodex member companies you’d like to hear from—we’ll do our best to make it happen. Now, it’s back to reality (and snow shoveling 🫠 ). Florida, you will be missed!

  • When bad actors learn that the only defense an enterprise has against law enforcement data requests is “good faith,” they see a target ripe for exploitation. 🎯 So, even though it may not be comfortable, we've got to talk about the historical vulnerabilities that enterprises often overlook surrounding law enforcement requests for information. Investment in cybersecurity infrastructure and training has long lagged in the public sector, particularly in police departments and investigatory organizations. At the same time, their attack surface has increased. Hackers have realized that credentials, sensitive information in case files, and other valuable data held by law enforcement agencies can be used very effectively as a trojan horse into a private corporation, or to launch ransomware or other attacks. For too long, the vulnerable channel of communication between law enforcement and private corporations has been left wide open. We stand ready as a strategic ally for the private and public sectors to guard against these evolving threats and protect the individual privacy entrusted to these companies. #LegalTech #DataProtection #security

Fast stats from Europol's SIRIUS EU Electronic Evidence Situation Report 2024 ⬇️ There has been an increasing volume and complexity of data requests. By the numbers, this looks like: ‣ EU data disclosure requests to major service providers rose 22% year-over-year, reaching 266,855 requests in 2023 ‣ Emergency Disclosure Requests (EDRs) also surged by 17%, with 21,746 EDRs processed in 2023, predominantly involving imminent threats (e.g., terrorism or child exploitation) ‣ The three most important datasets for criminal investigations were: connection logs (date, time and Internet Protocol (IP), address of connection to an online service), the name of the user, and the IP address used at the moment of first registration to the service These findings demonstrate the critical need for automated, scalable solutions to handle growing volumes efficiently. Overall, the report highlights the importance of streamlining urgent requests to protect public safety without procedural delays. #legal #DataRequests #ServiceProviders

Far too many police departments in the United States and other countries have poor account security hygiene, and often do not enforce basic account security precautions — such as requiring phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication. What does this mean for companies like yours? KrebsonSecurity breaks down "two unsavory outcomes" ⬇️ 1️⃣ Failing to immediately comply with an EDR — and potentially having someone’s blood on their hands 2️⃣ Or possibly leaking a customer record to the wrong person Just how widespread is this problem? In the past 12 months, Kodex has processed a total of 1,597 EDRs, and that 485 of those requests (~30 percent) failed a second-level verification. Just because someone can use a legitimate police department or government email to create a Kodex account doesn’t mean that user will be able to send anything. Even if one customer gets a fake request, Kodex is able to prevent the same thing from happening to another. Love our partnership with Kodex. Matt Donahue has assembled a stellar team that’s intelligent, innovative, responsive, and highly motivated to do good work. 👩🏾💻 They help bridge the gap between tech platforms and law enforcement to ensure secure data sharing, which helps us all create a safer internet and ❌ prevent bad actors from muddying the ecosystem. This is the kind of mission driven work I’m proud to be a part of! 💛
