Since the gut holds a very high immunoregulatory role, it is very influential on other organs in the body - including but not limited to the skin. When there are imbalances in the gut, it releases what is called pro-inflammatory cytokines throughout the body. Since the skin is the largest organ in the body, it reacts to the pro-inflammatory cytokines in various ways. An imbalance in your gut bacteria could have a negative influence on your skin. A few common skin concerns that might come with an unhealthy gut include but are not limited to eczema, dry skin, acne, sagging of the skin, and an overall breakdown of collagen. Your diet is one of the best and easiest changes you can make for your overall gut health. High fibre foods are beneficial to the quality of the bacteria in the gut. Be kind to your body and give it the nutrients, rest and relaxation that it needs for optimal skin health. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics

Black garlic is simply white garlic that has been aged and fermented for a period of up to 6 months under controlled temperatures and humidity. Its transformation from white to black and loss of its strong smell is the most noticeable alteration. White garlic's sulphur concentration is decreased during fermentation, eliminating the characteristic garlic smell. Its flavour likewise shifts from spicy to sweet, and its texture changes from crunchy to sticky. White garlic bulbs' primary biochemical, allicin, is transformed into the polyphenol S-allyl cysteine (SAC). This can result in a 10-fold increase in the phytochemical's effectiveness. It is this plant powerhouse that really provides the many health benefits. Black garlic contains a concentrated dose of antioxidants, with some studies suggesting that it may contain even more than regular garlic. Compared to fresh garlic, it’s also slightly higher in calories, fat and fibre, plus sodium and iron and a bit lower in carbohydrates and vitamin C. Although black garlic is generally considered safe for consumption, there are some potential side effects that need to be considered. Much like regular garlic, it may irritate the gastrointestinal tract and can cause symptoms like heartburn, gas, nausea and diarrhea, especially when consumed in large amounts. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics #blackgarlic #fermentedgarlic

The modern human microbiome bears little resemblance to the microbiome of isolated pockets of people living the hunter-gatherer lifestyle in Africa and South America. These are the few remaining peoples whose way of life reflects the way humans lived for the preceding several million years, unexposed to antibiotics and other modern microbiome-disruptive factors. Indigenous people who live a traditional lifestyle harbor microbial species that we lack, while we have acquired species that traditional people do not have. The health of hunter-gatherers with these microbiomes includes virtually no stomach ulcers, acid reflux, hemorrhoids, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, colon cancer, or other health conditions - what anthropologists label “diseases of civilization” - that commonly afflict us modern folk! #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics

Of all the probiotic bacteria studied to date, Lactobacillus gasseri shows some of the most promising effects on weight loss. Numerous studies in rodents have found that it has anti-obesity effects. Additionally, studies in adults have shown promising results. One study that followed 210 people with significant amounts of belly fat found that taking Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks reduced body weight, fat around organs, body mass index (BMI), waist size, and hip circumference. What’s more, belly fat was reduced by 8.5%. However, when participants stopped taking the probiotic, they gained back all of the belly fat within 1 month. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #weightloss #bmi #lactobacillusgasseri #probiotics #postbiotics

Sink your teeth into a juicy chunk of grapefruit, and you’ll be hit by an intense citrus aroma, gentle acidity, some cheerful sweetness and a wave of bitterness. Each bite is made to thrill your tastebuds with a flood of healthy chemicals that are good for your body. So the next time grapefruit makes your mouth pucker, remember these amazing facts about this super citrus: 1. Grapefruit contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory chemicals that help keep your cells happy and healthy, including naringin, the compound responsible for its bitter flavour. 2. Naringin has antibacterial properties that deter undesirable bacteria from settling down in the gut, which is good for a happy microbiome. 3. Good bacteria (like Bifidobacterium) can break down naringin into metabolites that help to keep the gut lining healthy while combatting inflammation. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics #guthealthmatters #guthealing #microbiome #holistichealth #healthyeating #foodismedicine #leakygut

Seems like an odd question, but many people think that poo is just undigested food... Poo is a waste product, but only a small part is unused food. Poo is a waste matter passed out from the bowels after food has been digested and processed. Poo consists mainly of water (75%); the rest is undigested fibre from fruit and vegetables (i.e. the food you can’t digest), protein (mainly from you), fat, salts, cells from the bowel wall, mucus made by the cells of the gut, and a lot of bacteria (hundreds of trillions of them), which help digest parts of the food that you have not used, and which are responsible for producing gas as well as chemicals we need. The colour of healthy poo is various shades of brown due to the effects of a chemical called stercobilin, which comes from when red blood cells renew themselves. Some foods, medications or diseases can change the colour of poo. For instance, iron tablets can make it black and a problem with the liver can make it chalk-coloured. The smell of poo is pretty awful; it comes from a mixture of chemicals mainly made by the gut bacteria. For example, hydrogen sulphide causes the rotten egg smell that, in fact, is perfectly normal. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics #guthealthmatters #guthealing #microbiome #holistichealth #healthyeating #foodismedicine #leakygut

Contemplating the notion that you could be obliviously self harming, seems a bit harsh but actually..... Self harm: Isn’t it weird that we commit the same self destructive behaviours around food and lifestyle hundreds or even thousands of times in our lifetime? Even when we know they accelerate disease and ageing, shorten our life, cloud our judgement and make us feel miserable! Sabotaging habits and self destructive behaviour, corporate profiteering (at our detriment) and social norms encouraging bad behaviour all come together to bring harm to ourselves. Self care: Believe it or not, becoming mindfully active in optimsing our gut health could be our most consequential and powerful life intervention. One of the most significant ways we can exert self-care is through the way in which we nourish ourselves and our inner ecosystem through the food we eat. Mindfully including prebiotics, which are a type of dietary fibre that has a more enriching effect on the good bugs in our gut, will also serve us well. #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics #guthealthmatters #guthealing #microbiome #holistichealth #healthyeating #foodismedicine #leakygut

Your gut produces serotonin – the "happy hormone" – which is famous for influencing mood, sleep, digestion, and even sex drive. Up to 90% of serotonin is made in the digestive tract, but it cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. Instead, it stays in your intestines and plays a crucial role in the communication between the gut and brain while helping with digestive functions. Аbout 10% of the remaining serotonin is made by nerve cells in your brain from an amino acid called tryptophan. You get tryptophan from food, and after that, it travels through the bloodstream to the brain, where it is converted into mood-regulating serotonin. A natural way to maintain healthy serotonin levels and support your mood is diet. Eating foods that contain tryptophan - such as edamame, eggs, turkey, bananas, nuts and cheese - promotes the production of this chemical in the brain and helps maintain your wellbeing. ⠀ #thegutpeople #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #probiotics #prebiotics #serotonin
