  • Veteran Representation in the 119th Congress As the 119th Congress begins its work, it's worth noting the strong presence of veterans—many of whom are actively advocating for policies that impact both current and former service members. According to Military Times, veterans make up a notable portion of this new Congress, bringing invaluable experience, leadership, and perspective to the legislative process. Marine Corps veterans, along with their fellow service members from other branches, continue to play a vital role in shaping decisions that affect national defense, veterans' affairs, and military policy. We encourage all our fellow Marines and members of the Marine Corps Reserve to stay informed and engaged in the ongoing legislative efforts that support our military community. • Leadership Development: A Key to Success for Managers Balancing work, family, and personal life can be overwhelming, especially when faced with the added pressure of managing a team. Many new managers struggle when they are thrust into leadership roles without proper training, development, or mentorship. In fact, approximately 60% of newly promoted managers fail within their first year (Ashkenas, 2015), highlighting a significant issue in leadership preparation. Here are three common reasons for this failure, and how to overcome them: 1. Negative Self-Talk: Every leader makes mistakes, but it's important to avoid negative self-talk that can undermine your confidence. When doubt creeps in, focus on positive affirmations and seek out inspiration. A positive mindset fuels your leadership, while negativity can hinder growth and decision-making. 2. Justifying Behavior and Blaming Others: Leadership requires accountability. It's essential to lown up to your mistakes rather than deflecting blame. Great leaders take responsibility for both successes and failures, setting the example for their teams. 3. Lacking Emotional Intelligence: Effective leaders possess emotional intelligence, staying calm under pressure and making thoughtful decisions. Leaders who maintain emotional control during stressful situations are better equipped to manage challenges and inspire confidence in their teams. As we work to develop future leaders, especially in the Marine Corps Reserve, these insights are crucial in fostering leadership that drives both individual growth and team success. Leadership is about people. Building trust, accountability, and emotional resilience within your team leads to stronger outcomes and a positive work culture. #Leadership #MarineCorpsReserve #Management #EmotionalIntelligence #Mentorship #LeadershipDevelopment #Teamwork #Growth #MarineCorps

Life can be exhausting, especially with a family. Juggling school runs, traffic, kids' moods, and homework can be overwhelming. Adding a problematic manager to the mix makes it even tougher, but I often sympathize with managers thrust into positions without training, self-development, or mentorship. Approximately 60% of newly promoted managers fail within their first year (Ashkenas, 2015), indicating a significant error in selecting candidates for advanced management roles. Here are three common reasons for this failure. Negative Self-Talk Avoid negative self-talk. As a new leader, mistakes are inevitable. When negative thoughts arise, detach emotionally; otherwise, it hinders your leadership. Shift your energy and maintain a positive mindset, whether through inspirational audio or videos. Positive self-talk supports you, while negativity is destructive and undermines your leadership potential. Justifying Your Behavior and Blaming Others Do you struggle to admit when you’re wrong? An article I read recounted a leader who blamed others for his actions. The author reflected, "The excuses people make never cease to amaze me.” Leadership is about creating an environment that helps individuals reach their potential and achieve company goals, but the buck stops with you as the leader, and you must accept responsibility for everything that happens under your watch. Lacking Emotional Intelligence Leaders must have emotional intelligence to succeed. A calm leader who assesses stressful situations is more effective than one who resorts to shouting. Leaders with self-control stay clear-headed during crises and maintain emotional balance. Those who manage multiple demands while focusing on group goals are the most likely to succeed. Leadership is about people, and if you want to become an effective leader, you must draw others into an active commitment to the team’s effort and build a spirit of positive relationships while creating a sense of purpose throughout the entire company. -------------------------------- Gifford Thomas is the founder of Leadership First and the author of Unlock The Hidden Leader, Become The Leader You Were Destined To Be and The Inspirational Leader, Inspire Your Team To Believe In The Impossible. At Leadership First, we are committed to publishing the very best inspirational leadership quotes and articles to inspire our 6.5M+ community of leaders to believe in the impossible while creating an environment free from toxic, fearful and intimidating leadership. • 🚨 Big Win for Junior Enlisted Servicemembers: Senate Finalizes Plans for Pay Boost in 2025 🚨 In a landmark move, the Senate has approved plans for a significant pay increase for junior enlisted servicemembers in 2025. This decision is a critical step in addressing longstanding concerns about military pay and retention, particularly among those just starting their careers. 🔹 The pay boost aims to improve the financial well-being of our junior enlisted troops, who are essential to the strength of our military. 🔹 It's an effort to address rising living costs, recruit new talent, and ensure that our military remains competitive in a challenging labor market. As we head into 2025, these changes will not only help to retain dedicated servicemembers but also provide them with the support they need to thrive. We must continue to advocate for policies that support the well-being of our military personnel and their families.
