About us
The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, nonprofit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people to live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 5, 000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of Greater Houston. The primary goal of the Lighthouse of Houston is direct service to the individual. This includes not only providing direct service, but a continual commitment to improving the quality and relevance of this service. All other organizational activities and functions are in support of this primary focus and have as their goal the development and dissemination of better service designs and interventions in order to enhance the optimal functioning of the individual.

In an era when disability rights and inclusion are at the forefront of national conversation, one of Houston’s longest-serving nonprofits is celebrating a remarkable milestone. The Lighthouse of Houston, a cornerstone institution that has transformed thousands of lives in the blind and low vision community, will commemorate its 85th anniversary with an interactive open house on November 19. The event, scheduled from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, will showcase the organization’s innovative approach to fostering independence and empowerment among people who are blind or low vision. A highlight will be a special brick ceremony at 1:30 PM, symbolizing the foundation of continued service for generations to come. “Our mission at The Lighthouse of Houston is to enable and empower people who are blind or low vision to realize their full potential,” says Jenna Dhayer, President of The Lighthouse of Houston. “Ultimately for us, our vision is to create a life without limits.” The event is open to the public, and will provide unique opportunities to: -Tour the facilities and experience groundbreaking programs that are reshaping possibilities for the blind and low vision community. -Contribute to a commemorative 85th Anniversary Mural. -Interact with Lighthouse clients and staff. The Lighthouse of Houston’s 85th anniversary celebration represents more than eight decades of service; it highlights the ongoing need for comprehensive support services for the blind and low vision community in one of America’s largest cities.
