The Nation’s Oldest Black Collegiate Newspaper, Est. 1924
About us
The Hilltop, established at Howard University in 1924 by Zora Neale Hurston and Eugene King, a Harlem Renaissance icon and a renowned anthropologist, is the oldest Black collegiate newspaper in America. Over its century-long history, the publication has been at the forefront of chronicling campus, D.C., and national news. The legacy of The Hilltop is marked by its profound reporting work, several national awards, and distinguished alumni, many of whom have ascended to the pinnacle of their professions. Among The Hilltop’s former staff are Pulitzer Prize winners, whose groundbreaking work has set new standards in journalism. Additionally, The Hilltop has been the training ground for leaders who have excelled in business, law, communications, and public service. By 1929, The Hilltop was published bi-monthly and then weekly in 1930. In 1995 and 2004 respectively, The Hilltop was notably ranked by The Princeton Review as the “Best Collegiate Newspaper in the Nation” and was featured in The New York Times as a premier college news source. In 2002, The Hilltop introduced its website, which currently receives thousands of hits daily. On February 28, 2005, The Hilltop newspaper claimed the spot as the only daily news publication in the country run by African Americans, not only in the collegiate realm, but also professionally. As it celebrates its centennial milestone, The Hilltop continues to act as a platform for voices, advancing its mission of balanced journalism and community engagement.

CAMPUS | The Harris-Walz campaign and President Ben Vinson III confirmed the campaign will host its election night event on The Yard next Tuesday. Vinson sent a university-wide email Friday, saying this will be the first time a presidential election night event will be hosted on a college campus in “modern history.” “We are incredibly proud of our alumna, Kamala Harris, who has already made history as the first woman of color and HBCU graduate to serve as our nation’s vice president,” Vinson said in the Nov. 1 email. “We are also honored that she has chosen Howard as the place to potentially make history again.” The campaign will rent several other Howard facilities and spaces that will support operations and security measures, though it was not specified which facilities would be used. The event is not open to the public, Vinson said, but the university is determining viewing opportunities for guests. It will also be nationally and internationally televised. Access to many spaces on campus will be modified Thursday afternoon, Vinson said. Students will still be able to access their residences, but auxiliary services such as dining will be “modified.” Fences are erected around The Yard and workers were seen Friday morning organizing construction materials. The Office of University Communications updated next week’s university operation status on Oct. 29, moving classes online the Wednesday and Thursday following Election Day on Nov. 5, given the possibility that results will not be finalized on Tuesday. The university will still be closed on Tuesday. Harris has used Howard’s campus before during her presidential campaign. In August, The Hilltop reported that she was spotted leaving campus in her motorcade outside the Interdisciplinary Research Building. The New York Times reported Harris used Howard facilities earlier in August. Harris also announced her 2016 presidential campaign at Howard. 🔗Click the link below to read more on how Vinson discusses the campaign’s decision to host election night HQ on campus. https://lnkd.in/eX9XGR-5 ✍🏾: JD Jean-Jacques and Natalie Betts 📸: Mia Butler and Karrington Cummings

Howard University’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously Friday to rescind Sean “Diddy” Combs’ honorary degree, terminate long-term relationships made with the rap artist and businessman and return his $1 million donation. “Mr. Combs’ behavior, as captured in a recently released video, is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor,” the statement said about Combs’ honorary degree while referencing a 2016 hotel surveillance video in which Combs assaulted then-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura. This is an ongoing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. https://lnkd.in/gjv2Ncsq
