We are grateful to the Pennsylvania House and Senate for declaring 2024 the Year of The Franklin Institute in celebration of our 200th anniversary! 🎉 It’s an honor to continue serving the Commonwealth by inspiring a passion for science and technology. A heartfelt thank you to Senator Nikil Saval and Representative Kristin Marcell (here with President and CEO Larry Dubinski) for their support in making this possible. Here’s to another 200 years of discovery!

This is your call to explore the fascinating history of communication technology! From bulky wired devices to sleek smartphones, telephones have come a long way... 📞 Early phones kept you tethered to one spot, relied on switchboard operators, and even shared lines with neighbors (so much for privacy!). Now, we carry tiny computers in our pockets. 😮 In the mid-20th century, the rise of “princess” phones made it common for teenagers to have their own phones in their bedrooms, a defining symbol of independence for a generation. Where do you think phone technology will go next? 💡 There is so much history to explore at the new Hamilton Collections Gallery—don’t miss it! 📸 The telephone pictures are from TFI’s Russell and Elizabeth Scott Antique Telephone Collection. #FranklinInstitute #ScienceMuseum #HamiltonCollectionsGallery #Telephones #History #Technology #Science #Communication

Today is National Dewey Decimal System Day! 📚 In 1825, 48 years before the Dewey Decimal System was even established, The Franklin Institute’s library began with just one book, growing from a small collection in a private home to a vital resource for scientists, students, and researchers. For nearly 200 years, it’s been a hub for education and discovery, even stepping in to replace patents lost in the 1836 Federal Patent Office fire. Here’s to celebrating the enduring power of libraries and the pursuit of knowledge! ⭐ Pictured is the library in our first building 1827-1934 (FI Cat. #7018), and "The Stacks" as they are from 2001-Present! 🏛️ #FranklinInstitute #ScienceMuseum #Library #DeweyDecimalSystem #History #VisitPhilly #BTS #ThingsToDoInPhilly #Read #Books
