About us
Founded in 2000 by Diane Strickler, a neo-natal nurse and social worker, The Family Center evolved out of the Grosse Pointe Youth Summit, held in 1999, when community leaders and educators met to explore ways our community could become more youth and family friendly. Our mission then was to link parents and professionals to the resources needed to better understand childhood development, life transitions, family dynamics, and the challenges faced by our youth as they matured in a fast-paced and rapidly changing world. That mission has expanded, over the years, in response to community requests to address issues covering the full spectrum of family life.

Nicole Runyon, LMSW, an esteemed psychotherapist, parent coach, and keynote speaker, spoke to the Defer Elementary School Parent Community on "Free to Fly: How Technology Hinders Childhood Independence and How to Help Children Grow". Parents stayed after the excellent presentation for questions and conversation. A delicious dinner was provided by Ferlito's Italian Restaurant in GP Woods. Students from Grosse Pointe South High School were in the Defer gym with the children so the parents could attend the presentation.

Robert Waldinger's book "The Good Life" was read for one of The Family Center's community bookclub discussions. The book explores what it means to live a meaningful and happy life based on real-life data from a long-term study on human development.
It’s the holiday season, and 1 in 3 of us is lonely. As we move into the holiday season, think about the people in your life – people at home, in your community, at work. Consider reaching out to one person who you suspect is more alone than they want to be. Ask them how they’re planning to spend the holidays. Might they welcome an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner, or just a casual suggestion that you two get together for coffee? This gesture is not just for their benefit, but for yours. As the Zen teacher John Tarrant reminds us, “Attention is the most basic form of love.” Giving your attention to someone who is lonely can be life-giving and even lifesaving. Who in your life might be lonely? Reach out to them. #thanksgiving #holidays #loneliness #zen

We are so thankful for our wonderful school community! The Maire School Community had a very successful Thanksgiving food drive collecting all the side dishes families need for a Thanksgiving dinner. The Grosse Pointe South Hockey Team sorted and bagged all the food so that each bag contained veggies, mac and cheese, stuffing mix, cornbread mix, and a mashed potato mix. We delivered the bags to schools for distribution to families.
