About us
The East Foundation is a non-profit tax-exempt organization established in 2007 upon the passing of Robert C. East. The Foundation operates six ranches across approximately 217,000 acres of south Texas native rangelands making it one of the largest private landowners in both Texas and the nation. With administrative offices in San Antonio, the Foundation deploys a staff of over 40 throughout south Texas to meets its mission to promote the advancement of land stewardship through ranching, science, and education. To fulfill its mission, the Foundation: -Uses its land as a working laboratory where scientists and managers work together to address issues important to wildlife, rangeland management and overall ranch productivity. -Through good land stewardship, ensures that ranching and wildlife management work together in order to conserve healthy rangelands. -Influences public policy by ensuring our government and universities have land stewards’ best interests in mind. -Builds future leaders through programs that introduce students to private land stewardship. -Invests in professional development for the next generation of land stewards through internships, graduate fellowships, and close engagements with university programs. -Maintains its legacy by upholding the East family’s vision and values established more than a century ago. Congratulations to Allie Biedenharn on being named Executive Director of Texas Brigades! Texas Brigades "We are excited for Allie to join Texas Brigades as we continue to build on the foundation of two generations of conservation leaders in every community. These leaders are greatly needed today as people are more separated from the land than ever before, and Allie is uniquely qualified to lead Texas Brigades with the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead," said CEO of Texas Brigades, Jeff Petter. As a former member of the East Foundation family, we're excited to see Allie leading an organization dedicated to empowering youth with conservation leadership skills. Her commitment to developing the next generation of conservation ambassadors aligns perfectly with Texas Brigades' mission. Here's to the next chapter! 🌿 https://ow.ly/kQxY50UzzZF

As we welcome 2025, we’re proud to reflect on a year of advancing land stewardship in South Texas. Our team on the ranches worked through challenging conditions, from managing spring and fall calving herds to securing water resources and implementing critical wildfire mitigation measures. Through it all, they demonstrated unwavering dedication. Our scientists made significant breakthroughs across multiple research initiatives, including wildlife conservation and population dynamics, grazing interactions, fire ecology, and more. Their impact will be long-lasting and extend far beyond our fence lines. Meanwhile, our education programs reached thousands of students through Behind the Gates Field Days, Classroom Lessons, and our Land Stewardship Ambassadors program. They continue to connect students with the land and inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. Through our ranching, science, and education work, we demonstrate how sound land management practices create lasting benefits for all of Texas. Here’s to advancing land stewardship together in 2025. Happy New Year from all of us at East Foundation!

🦌 Wildlife Watch: White-tailed Deer Breeding Season December brings increased deer activity across our ranches as breeding season peaks in South Texas. During this time, bucks actively pursue does and compete with other males, making them more visible across the landscape. Did you know? Bucks can lose up to 20-30% of their body weight during the rut - they're so focused on breeding that they rarely stop to eat. Due to hormonal changes, their necks can also swell up to 50% larger than usual. Be on the lookout for classic rut behaviors: bucks making scrapes on the ground, rubbing their antlers on trees, and following does with their necks stretched out low to the ground. #WildlifeWednesday #WhitetailDeer #SouthTexas #Ranching #WildlifeScience #EastFoundation

Our valued partner, Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute-Texas A&M University Kingsville, recently published an important piece highlighting a landmark achievement in conservation history: South Texas' designation as the first National Legacy Landscape for Northern Bobwhite Conservation. This recognition, awarded by the Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative, celebrates our region's unique role in preserving one of America's most iconic species. At East Foundation, our commitment to Northern Bobwhite conservation is demonstrated through our dedicated research projects and land stewardship practices. Wild bobwhites maintain a self-sustaining population across roughly 10-12 million acres—approximately half of South Texas's 20-million-acre landscape. This designation reflects the importance of our South Texas landscape – not just for bobwhites but as a sanctuary for thousands of plant and animal species that depend on this unique ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/g39uwFqU #EastFoundation #WildlifeConservation #Research #SouthTexas #Biodiversity #LegacyLandscape

Here's to branding days at Buena Vista Ranch! Today and tomorrow, our ranch team is working cattle on this remote ranch. Buena Vista is a classic Sand Sheet ranch dominated by deep sandy grassland with small active dunes on the southern end. Spanning 15,100 acres, Buena Vista represents a healthy balance of working ranchland and wildlife habitat. Our cattle operation here rotates through four pastures using conservative stocking rates, and our management efforts support not just our livestock but also thriving white-tailed deer and bobwhite quail populations. It's all part of East Foundation's commitment to sustainable ranching practices across our 217,000 acres of native rangeland, where science meets stewardship. We were proud to sponsor the Texas Children in Nature Networking Summit, where leaders across Texas gathered to explore innovative ways to connect youth with nature and the outdoors. From natural playgrounds to citizen science initiatives, the summit showcased inspiring approaches to environmental education and conservation. 🌿 #EastFoundation #TexasChildrenInNature #OutdoorEducation #Conservation
🌿🌟Reflections: Texas Children in Nature Networking Summit🌟🌿 This week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Texas Children in Nature Networking Summit, where I gained insights and inspiration on how to connect people—especially youth—with nature. 🌳 Here's a quick look at the key takeaways and memorable moments: 💡 Key Lessons Learned: 🌱 Outdoor classrooms and natural playgrounds are transformative tools for education and childhood development. 🌱 Promoting eco-solutions is more effective when framed as addressing "threats" rather than individual "choices." 🌱 Apps like Merlin Bird ID and iNaturalist are invaluable for citizen science and connecting with nature. 🌱 Citizen volunteer research achieves 80-90% of the accuracy of scientific studies—highlighting the power of community participation! 🌱 Solving environmental challenges often works best by leveraging the full benefits of ecosystems. 📚 Workshops & Presentations: 💚 Lake Waco Wetlands: A constructed wetland with profound impacts on education, wildlife, and community engagement. 💚 David Vela’s Story: From fishing in Southeast Texas to becoming the first Latino nominated as Director of the National Park Service, his journey emphasized engaging diverse youth in outdoor spaces. 💚Green Spaces: Practical steps for bringing native plant gardens to schools and inspiring the next generation of conservationists. 💚 Texas Healthy Parks Plan: Using strategic mapping tools to increase park access in underserved communities and improve public health outcomes. 💚 Chasing the Tide: A moving documentary about walking Texas’ barrier islands, showcasing resilience along the coast. 🎓 I also attended inspiring sessions on youth advocacy, natural playground equity, storytelling through photography, and strategies for making environmental education measurable and impactful. I met some incredible people and hopefully made some long-lasting friendships along the way. 🫶 This summit reinforced my passion for outdoor education and connecting communities to the natural world. 🌍 I'm excited to take these insights back to my work and continue inspiring others to care for our planet. 💚 Thank you to all the sponsors for allowing this opportunity to happen!
